If you’re running a small business, then at some point you may be faced with the problem that you want to gear up your marketing in order to grow the business, but at the same time you’re afraid of getting it wrong and losing whatever you invest in it.

Whilst large businesses can afford to throw large amounts of money at campaigns, and absorb the losses if their marketing doesn’t work, small businesses need a return on every pound they spend. They need some level of certainty that the money and effort they invest is going to produce good results. Otherwise, what can happen is that they keep doing what they’re already doing (which probably isn’t working that well), or they blow a load of money on advertising or marketing solutions that don’t work, and then lose faith in outside help or marketing altogether.

If you want to avoid wasting money on marketing and advertising, or getting burnt by marketing consultants then you’ll want to minimise your risks and invest your money in solutions that work for you.

As you read this article you’ll discover 5 options for learning how to do your own marketing or recruiting outside help, and the advantages and disadvantages of each option.

5 Options for Learning Marketing Skills or Getting Help with Marketing

1) Learn how to do it yourself through reading books, attending workshops, using audio programmes etc.

The obvious advantage of this is that it’s the cheapest option, plus as you learn to do things for yourself, you retain control of your marketing programme. However, the major drawbacks are that the learning curve is very steep and it may take a long time to learn what works, plus you may end up learning a lot of generic information that doesn’t directly apply to your business or that doesn’t give you an actual step by step plan. You may learn what to do, but not how to do it or the exact steps you need to take to implement what you’ve learnt.

2) Use a marketing consultant/agency

The advantage of this is that you effectively hand over the problem to someone else who deals with it on your behalf, leaving you to get on with what you do best. The disadvantages of this option are that you don’t learn what works for your business and you are no longer fully in control of your marketing function – so you won’t know why some things work and others don’t.

Also, this is probably the most expensive option, and some marketing consultants have got a tendency to prescribe their pet solution, before even diagnosing the actual problem and the situation. Not only that, but if your problem is, for example, lack of sales, and you decide the solution is PR, and then hire a PR consultant, they will work to your brief. In other words, you’ve diagnosed the problem and precribed the solution. However, PR may not be the best solution to your problem, and a proper analysis of your target market and your current activities, budget and opportunities is required before forming the conclusion that a PR consultant is the answer.

3) Group coaching/training programmes

The advantage of this is the lower cost plus regular classes and fieldwork that keep you on track. Some people will benefit from working in a group, especially as they learn from the experiences of others, and particularly if there is a “buddying” system in place.

The disadvantage is the lack of personal coaching/consulting or significant input from the expert in examining your particular situation. Not only that, but you’ll be going at a pace as dictated by the course outline, when you might want to move considerably faster or even slower. Also, most programmes go through a range of strategies as decided by the programme creator, some (or many) of which are not applicable to your particular situation. This is especially true if the programme is designed for the generic “small business” – what works for a dry cleaning business may not work for a consultant, coach or professional.

The result is that you may be learning 10 or 12 strategies at a rather superficial level, rather than homing in on the 2 or 3 strategies that are really going to deliver results into your business, and which are manageable.

4) One to one business/marketing coaching

The advantage of this is the personal attention, and the ability to address your specific issues. This works out a little more expensive than a group training programme, but less expensive than hiring a consultant.

How this works varies widely and a lot depends on whether the coach is using a coaching model (i.e. they guide you in working out your own solutions) or a marketing model (they take on a role more similar to a consultant than a coach, and tell you what will work for your situation). Most do not seem to offer any structure, specific outcomes, or programme of activities so it can be hard to tell what you’re getting for your money.

5) A Structured Programme of consulting, training and mentoring delivered one to one

In this scenario the consultant uses a structured series of exercises to analyse the client’s situation, help them build their marketing foundation, overcome problems and obstacles standing in their way and works with them to create a series of marketing actions that will work best for them.

This typically costs about the same as marketing coaching, but has more tangible outcomes and the consultant will also be doing things on the client’s behalf in between sessions. The advantages are that the client is fully in control of their own situation and is being guided and taught how to do things for themselves. The consultant will also use their expertise to steer the client towards solutions that will work for their situation, their market and their type of business, and filter out approaches that are irrelevant or less likely to produce good results.

The disadvantages are that you still have to do the work yourself (unless you pay for help with implementation), and if the consultant is helping you to craft your message and build your foundation, then there may be a delay before any strategies get fully implemented. This is really the approach that is analogous to building your house on rock rather than on sand – it takes a little longer to lay the foundations, but it’s a sturdier, stronger solution in the end.

Caskets made entirely of gold are very rare. When they are found, they are usually priceless artifacts of historical significance. In the modern day, some people choose to buy caskets with decorative golden inlays.

It is important to keep in mind that not all caskets are used in burial or funerals. Some are used merely as containers for jewelry or artifacts. Golden caskets often have a religious significance. Many relics from Buddhism and Christianity are kept in elaborate golden caskets. For example, the thirty-three relics of Buddha are stored in golden caskets around the world. These relics range from items that Buddha used to some of his teeth and his collarbone. Most of the Buddha relics are housed in museums and are rarely displayed to the public.

The ancient Egyptians often used golden caskets to entomb the mummies of Pharaohs and other important public figures. The ancient Egyptians believed that people could take their possessions with them to the afterlife and would bury a person’s belongings and pets with them. The Pharaohs’ servants were often killed and buried when the Pharaoh died in order to continue their service in the afterlife. Golden caskets were used to entomb the mummies as well as many items that the person used in day-to-day life. These golden caskets are priceless archeological finds that are studied thoroughly and kept in museums around the world. Scientists still use these artifacts to learn about ancient Egyptian society.

Some modern day caskets have golden decorations. People may choose to have a golden cross or other religious symbols on the casket. These decorations are often expensive, but they can be extremely beautiful and detailed, adding luxury to the casket.

Golden caskets are rare works of art that contain some of the world’s great treasures. Modern day caskets with gold inlays or decoration can help people say goodbye to their loved one with style and dignity.

Most online MBA courses are commonly put together to meet the needs of working students with undergraduate degrees in business related programs, as well as those with undergraduate degrees outside the area of business. Depending on the student’s prior education in business, most online MBA courses have a 30 credit program, that can often be completed in as little as two years. Depending on the learning institution, students may transfer in up to 6 credits towards their MBA.

In order to know what you need to take an online MBA course, you should first understand how online MBA courses work. All work in the online classrooms is completed and submitted through the computer. Written work is usually submitted as an email attachment. Just like in a traditional classroom, students are often expected to read any textbook material prior to the due date specified in his/her syllabus or course calendar. Class participation is commonly expected from each student in order to successfully pass each course.

It is not uncommon to finish an entire MBA degree program from the comfort of your own home. But if you desire to have a personal meeting with your professor, you are normally welcome to schedule one. The only thing you need in order to take an MBA course is a computer and the desire. The computer would need to be internet ready, with the capability to send email attachments. Depending on the specific institution, windows 95 or greater is necessary.

Registering for an online MBA course is fairly simple. It is basically the same process you endure when you intend to apply for your education through a classroom. You must submit a completed application to the learning institution. Your application fee, and a copy of your resume should accompany the application, as well as any undergraduate and graduate transcripts. Very often your GMAT exam scores will also be necessary. If you already have a Master’s Degree from an accredited college, you may not be required to take the GMAT exam. That will depend on the individual learning institution.

Online MBA courses can be costly, but as long as the institution is accredited, financial aid is available. Financial assistance is often available in the form of loans, grants, and scholarships. To apply for grants, you need to fill out the federal FAGSA form, as well as check with your school’s financial aid office for aid they may offer. Sometimes, even veteran’s benefits may be available to the student. After registering for the online MBA course, it is always best to visit the school’s financial assistance office, or visit that section of their web page for available scholarships and grants.

Understanding the processes and procedures of online MBA courses is important before you enroll. With an internet ready computer, a desire to learn, online MBA courses could be perfect from you. With online MBA courses, you can get the degree you desire from the comfort of your own home

20 million people in the United Stated have asthma, a chronic
respiratory disease that makes it impossible for them to take
breathing for granted.

Our lungs are filled with hollow tube like passages that
resemble the branches on a tree. These passages gradually become
smaller and smaller ending in tiny pockets where oxygen and
carbon dioxide are exchanged. For those with asthma, swelling in
the hollow tubes that fill the lungs makes breathing difficult
and uncomfortable. This inflammation causes an increased
sensitivity to allergens and a host of other asthma triggers
like exercise, medications, stress, pollution, humidity and even
laughter.

There is no cure for asthma, but medication, and environmental
and lifestyle changes can help to alleviate the symptoms and
keep asthma from limiting the lives of those afflicted.

The symptoms of asthma vary from person to person; early morning
or late night coughing, wheezing, chest tightness, fatigue,
anxiety and shortness of breath are all common. Allergen induced
asthma usually becomes apparent before the age of 35. Non
allergic asthma usually has its onset in middle age and can be
triggered or worsened by reflux disease, exercise, weather
changes and illness.

So who gets asthma? It is generally believed that exposure to
allergens early in life can trigger asthma, and the rapid rise
in the disease among children is cause for concern, but heredity
plays a role too and can predispose certain populations to this
chronic condition. According to the American Academy of Allergy,
Asthma and Immunology children with a genetic predisposition are
40% more likely to develop the disease than those without the
hereditary link. There isn’t anything that can be done to remove
the heredity factor for asthma, but the disease is highly
treatable.

When it comes to asthma, the best first line treatment is always
lifestyle and environmental changes. Removing the influences
that can trigger asthma related symptoms is the best first
course of action. Keeping the environment clean and dust free to
avoid exposure to mold, mildew and dust mites, avoiding pets and
smoke, staying inside on windy days, always riding in the car
with the windows up, avoiding exposure to household chemicals
and perfumed body products, and running a dehumidifier on humid
days can all help with specific environmental allergen triggers.

Prescription medications, or combinations of medications, are
valuable tools in treating the symptoms of asthma.
Bronchodilators are short acting medicines that help to open the
breathing passageways of the lungs by relaxing them, while
steroids are longer acting and help to decrease the swelling in
the tissues lining the lungs. These medications come in the form
of pills and inhalers and can be used with other medications to
develop the right regimen for each individual patient.

Asthma is a common chronic respiratory disease with symptoms
that can range from mild to serious, and can even become life
threatening during a severe asthma attack, but asthma is also
highly treatable. With the right combination of lifestyle,
environmental and medical treatment, asthmatics can live healthy
and active lives.

While most people acknowledge that opposites attract, they are
also quick to point out the men and women generally tend to be
different in a number of ways. Although this is basically true,
it isn’t an excuse to not have romance in your marriage. Men and
women can both be romantic with their spouse once they
understand the likes and dislikes of their partner. Sometimes it
just takes a little patience, attention and effort on your part
to get things going and to make romance happen.

For the husbands that have no idea where to begin with their
wives, you can always start with a day at the mall. Prepare a
shopping list of specific items or stores you know she either
frequents or would enjoy receiving a gift from. If you still
feel quite clueless as to what you buy your wife, here is your
own shopping list guaranteed to thrill her. Begin at a bath shop
and buy her lotion, bath gel and/or powder. Next, visit a
lingerie shop. If you are unsure of your wife’s size, ask the
employees for help. There is no need to be embarrassed and they
are more than happy to assist you in your search. Locate a fine
and reputable jewelry store.

If you are unsure of your wife’s ring size, stick to a
necklace, bracelet or brooch. Stop by a liquor store and pick up
her favorite bottle of wine or a bottle of champagne for no
particular reason other than to celebrate each other. Your next
stop should be the flower shop where you can pick out her
favorite flowers or a simple rose. Finally, you will need a card
to accompany all of your purchases. If you prefer, you can make
your own card or write a personalized love letter instead. Make
sure that all of her gifts are wrapped separately and enjoy the
pleasure you both will get from your efforts!

Now for the wives who want to do something extra special and
romantic for their husbands. You can either buy him a romantic
card or write him a personal love letter before sealing the
envelope and sealing it with a kiss. Make sure you use the
reddest lipstick you have for the kiss and then mail it to him.
For a variation on this idea, spray a card or note with your
perfume. Try and do your best not to become a choice between him
and his passions, whether they are sports, computers, etc.

He was once a huge fan of yours and you simply have to remind
him of that at make it worth his while to be your fan once
again. If you have trouble understanding your man in your
relationship, take the time to discover what it is about him
that makes him who he is. Robert Bly and Rachel Snyder have some
wonderfully entertaining and insightful books to assist you on
this subject. Not only will you be able to understand your
husband a little better, but you will be able to increase your
intimacy level and trust as a result of your efforts.

When I first started staying at the Neptune Motel, they had a decent continental breakfast with a good selection of donuts, bread for toast, muffins, fresh fruit and more. My favorite items where the orange juice and the little packets of Carnation Hot Chocolate that I would mix with my coffee.

The motel rooms were nice and new, the towels fluffy. I even liked the hand lotion. It didn’t dry my hands like some alcohol based lotions and it didn’t make them feel greasy . . . they felt just right after rubbing on the lotion.

In the three years or so that I’ve been staying there, a couple times a month or so, things have changed. The carpets are showing stains, the towels seem thinner and so is the hand lotion. The selection for breakfast has dwindled. There are no more donuts. The hot chocolate is gone, and the orange juice has changed to a cheaper brand and now tastes watered down. I never eat the complimentary breakfast anymore.

About a hundred yards down the street is another motel where I can stay for about 20% less and yet, I choose to stay at the Neptune.

What keeps me coming back is Betty, the morning desk clerk. I like her. She’s friendly and always has a smile. When the Neptune decided to raise their rates, Betty fought for my standing commercial rate. She won. I stay. When Betty goes, I will, too. And I’m sure she will be going.

Just as the Neptune has continually shown a lack of understanding of service to me as a client, I’m willing to bet they show the same disregard also for their internal customer service as well. I have seen turnover at the desk many times in the last three years. I’ve not heard Betty complain, but one day she will move on like others before her, and the Neptune will lose a great employee and at least one steady customer.

To stay competitive, businesses have to recognize what our customers and our employees need. If we don’t take the time to assess those needs . . . and fill them, we run the risk of losing both.

Money is the number one thing that married couples fight about.
But do you realize that the tension surrounding money begins
long before the happy couple say ‘I do?’ Wedding costs can
rapidly escalate out of control which is why it’s so important
to begin the planning by devising a realistic budget. And once
you’ve got the numbers crunched, it’s equally important that you
both stick to the budget.

And while a wedding budget doesn’t sound all that glamorous, it
doesn’t have to be a bad thing. In fact, planning your wedding
without a budget is almost guaranteed to land you into serious
financial debt. What’s the key to success? As it will be
throughout your marriage, open, honest, two-way communication is
an absolute must.

Newly-engaged couples must talk about how each envisions his and
her special day. Women work on the assumption that guys don’t
care about the details but that’s not always true. It is, after
all, the man’s big day, too and he has a family to please as
well.

Once the excitement of the engagement wears off, go somewhere
quiet and talk about what’s important to each of you in regards
to your wedding day. Listening to your partner’s opinion is as
important as talking so be sure to do both. Then, make a list of
what you both want (to arrive in a horse-drawn carriage,
lobster, renaissance theme, color scheme, etc.) and what are
absolute necessities (for example a photographer, caterer,
rings, etc.). You’re going to use this information when it’s
time to allocate your budget.

Once you both have an idea of what’s important, it’s time to
crunch the numbers. You’ve got to determine how much money is
available now (for example, in savings accounts, stocks/bonds,
real estate, trust funds), how much you’ll have to commit to
saving from your regular income streams, and how much you can
realistically expect others to kick in. Depending on how far out
the actual wedding date is you may want to consider opening a
higher-interest bearing account for the money so that it can
earn interest.

When considering what others may be able to put towards the
cause it’s really important that you don’t make unrealistic
demands. Take whatever others are willing to contribute
graciously and try not to belabor the issue. Getting angry or
disappointed in the amounts you are being given isn’t a very
mature way of handling the situation.

When you know where the money’s coming from and how much is
coming, you’ll know how much you’ll be able to spend. Now make
another list of all wedding-related expenses and allocate a
dollar amount or the percentage you’re willing to spend next to
each item. This will help when you’re actually contracting for
these services. Remember that if you exceed your budgeted amount
in one category, you’ll have to scale back another so your
budget will stay balanced. Because budgeting is so very
important for most couples, you’ll find that wedding budget
worksheets, software and other tools are available everywhere,
so go find one and start using it right now!

Price is an often overlooked marketing strategy, as many tend to focus on promotions or advertising. Pricing strategies, however, can have a large impact on sales and (more importantly) profit. The price is what your customer pays and/or what the end consumer pays for a product or service. In the case of products not sold directly to the end user, pricing is often described as “wholesale” and “retail.” When the distribution channel is long (such as when there is a manufacturer, broker/distributor, retailer, and end consumer), multiple mark-ups can occur between the wholesale and the retail price.

Your optimal pricing strategy will depend on more than your costs. Forces within your business environment such as your competitors, your suppliers, the availability of substitute products, and your customers come into play as well. Positioning (how you want to be perceived by your target audience) is also a consideration.

Pricing Strategies

There are a variety of pricing strategies in existence. Each strategy is used in a different set of circumstances. Some of the things to consider when choosing the best strategy for your situation are your costs; both short term and long term sales and profit goals; competitors’ activities; and customer lifetime value. While there are others, a few of the more popular pricing strategies available to you are:

Cost plus mark-up. Here, you decide the profit you want to make before setting the price. Figure out your costs and your selling price is simply your costs plus your pre-determined profit number. This approach helps keep your profitability top-of-mind, but may also result in prices that are out-of-line with customer expectations and competitor pricing.

Competitive pricing. When competitive pricing, you look at the prices your competitors are charging and use those prices as a benchmark when pricing your own products. You and your competitors’ positioning strategies will determine whether you price at par, slightly below, or slightly above the competition.

Price skimming. This technique is used when you offer a unique or scarce product with few or no substitutes. The price is set high, resulting in high margins for the seller. Buyers are those that are willing to pay the price because of the product’s prestige and/or uniqueness. In the case of a scarce but necessary product, customers pay the price because they have no choice. Often, price skimming is a short-term strategy as competitors enter with their own products, bringing prices down. In the case of scarce products, either the need passes (salt during an ice storm, for example) or the shortage is temporary. Before considering this technique, be aware that if your customers feel you have taken advantage of them, you could be building “bad will” for your business.

Penetration pricing. This is the opposite of price skimming. Prices are set low in an effort to gain large market share. Because the penetration price does not cover costs, this is also a temporary strategy. For this strategy to be profitable, customers must be willing to pay your normal, higher price.

Loss leader. Here, you price one or more products below cost to attract customers. You hope that those customers will purchase other profitable products from you. This strategy is often implemented as part of a short-term promotion.

Close out. This is a tactical move to clear slow-moving or excess products out of inventory. You sell the inventory at a steep discount to avoid storing or discarding the product. End-of season merchandise, perishables that are about to expire, and prior software versions or book printings are examples of eligible closeout items.

Multiple unit pricing. Also called quantity discount. The customer gets a price break for purchasing multiple units or large quantities.

Membership or trade discounting. Here, some customers (those that you know are heavy or frequent purchasers) are given an elite status, which gives them the privilege of a price discount on their purchases. This elite status can be based on occupation, membership in an organization, subscription status, or some other criteria.

Variable pricing. With a variable pricing strategy, different customers pay different prices. Often, this strategy is used for project work. Each project has unique characteristics so is priced by the job. In other cases, the price is negotiated with each customer (cars are an example).

Versioning. This is offering the same product with different levels of functionality. Each level is priced differently and includes a different bundle of attributes. Software and Web hosting companies often use this pricing strategy. A trial or very basic version may be offered at low or no cost. Upgraded versions are available at higher costs.

Bundling. Here, several items are sold together at a price less than if they were purchased alone. By bundling a popular item with lesser-known products, you can increase your sales. Additionally, in the case of inventoried items, you may be able to avoid a closeout.

Impact of Internet on Pricing Strategies

Aside from making some pricing strategies more prevalent, the Web has also affected the importance of choosing correct pricing strategies, by allowing customers to be better informed and more vocal. In the case of consumer products, the purchaser can go to www.MySimon.com or another price comparison service and in seconds look at a side-by-side price comparison from several online retailers.

There are also numerous forums and discussion boards where members discuss their experience with providers. For example, your customer in Paris can complain or spread praise about you to a potential customer in St. Louis. This means the customer can not only make a better decision before purchasing, but can also better spread the word (both praise and complaints) after the purchase. For these reasons, the Web has made it more important that you remain competitively priced with your competition and maintain sensible pricing practices.

Combined, smart use of both the Internet and available pricing strategies can help boost your company’s bottom line.

When it comes to our children we do need to be the ones in control. We are responsible for their safety and well being of course. But we are also the ones that need to teach them independence, good decision making skills, and build their self esteem at the same time. Learn to pick your battles and your whole family will run smoother and everyone will be much happier.

First off does it really matter if your child wears red striped pants with a blue polka dotted shirt? If we are going to church or somewhere special then yes I would prefer that my daughter at least somewhat match, but if we are at home or just running to the store I let her pick her own clothes as long as they are weather appropriate. Yes I get some funny looks but I will have my revenge later because I of course take pictures of all the colorful clothing combinations she has chosen and will be able to tease her about them later. My mom did the same thing with me, she has this wonderful picture of me with orange and pink flowered pants and a green and blue striped shirt.

Does it really matter if every corner of her room is picked up each and every day? I say no, she has an area where she does her “projects” and I personally see no reason why that can’t be a little messy at times. But we do have a hard and fast rule that once a week the room is totally cleaned and any toys or books must be picked up from other areas of the house before bed. She wins and I win.

When it comes down to doing an arts and crafts project you need to be prepared to throw out the directions sometimes. If their imagination takes them to a different place than the directions then so what. Most of the time you are doing arts and crafts for them to have fun anyway, so why stifle them and make it less fun. My daughter wanted to do a scrapbook so I got all the necessary stuff and as it turns out she really just wanted to make a book of her different “creations” using glue, markers, glitter, and other craft supplies. So what, I put up the photographs and she had a great time and I had a blast watching and helping her when asked.

My daughter likes to help me bake cakes, her favorite part is stirring the batter. Sometimes a little slops over but oh well, she will eventually get better at it especially if I don’t berate her and continue to let her help me. I have found that with practice she is getting better at neatly adding ingredients and stirring.

Basically what I am saying is you cannot expect perfection from your children. It just isn’t going to happen. They need to practice the skills you are teaching them and sometimes they will make mistakes. Don’t get me wrong if they are being naughty then by all means take control and dish out the appropriate discipline, but if they are making mistakes because they are trying to learn then a little encouragement and patience will go a long way.

We also all want to teach our children to be independent and sometimes they are going to show their independence a little too strongly for our tastes. That is when you need to make the decision is this a battle I need to control or is it just not a big deal?

After all just because you are the parent and in control does not mean you have to “win” each time you and your child disagree.

Remember the parenting skills you are using now are the ones your children will probably use when they raise your grandchildren. You might also want to keep in mind that someday when you are older the roles may get reversed and your children will be the ones “in control” of you.

Here is a brief algorithm for diagnosis you can refer to, before speaking with your physician or dermatologist:

I home this will help to be a guide that will help determine what kinds of lesions may be of concern, and what signs your dermatologist will be looking for.

Some lesions you may find on your epidermis will turn out not to be skin cancer, but regardless, they can still be of concern. Though perhaps not the worst thing that could happen to your skin, certain kinds of diagnosis’ can be very important to attend to right away.

If then character of your skin legion is brown or black, it is likely a kind of Pigmented BBC. These legions are mostly nodular and can be totally pigmented or appear in fractions of pigment. Again, as with any skin legion, you will want to consult your doctor as soon as possible. There are many other possibilities as to what this kind of legion could be other than skin cancer.

One way to diagnose your skin disease is by the appearance of it. If the legion you find is scar-like, it likely falls under the category of Sclerotic BBC. The characteristics of these particular legions are that they appear flat or even depressed, if the border of the legion is not well defined, or if the legion appears shinylike a scar. However, something like this could just be a traumatic scar and not skin cancer at all.

If you legion is yellowish it may be what is called a Nodular BBCthe majority of these legions will be found on the face. Sometimes they are more pearly colored, they may have a rolled edge, stretching the skin will help you see the legion better, these legions are slow-growing and are almost always on the face. However, there are several other kinds of skin disease that could have similar appearance that is why it is recommended that you always consult your doctor when you find a legion on your skin.

A reddish colored legion on the skin could possibly be Superficial BBC. The legion may have a fine scale, will appear perhaps with a thin, beaded pearly boarder surrounding it, these legions tend to have atropic centers. Depending on if the legion is scaly or smooth, the legion could be one of many different types of skin disease.

As with any cancer, if the illness is identified soon enough, it is more effectively treatablethe same goes for other kinds of skin disease. So you do not want to put off diagnosis or the necessary treatment.
