I have been browsing for a home alarm system for 2 weeks now and I finally stumbled into the system that seems to fit my hut, my husband and kids and our lifestyle.

A plenty of them were scrap…and I was bitter about that. Everybody I recognize says Google is the freshest…anyhow, subsequently searching all over those pages we couldn’t obtain what we were searching for. We didn’t desire a difficult sales process and we didn’t want to remember a good deal about it. Nearly all of these websites were bothersome sales pitches – I wanted selective information!

Thankfully, that’s my friend (she’s the best) Trisha McCarthy. She offers the best ideas to my mind to put me back on course. Caring souls you can trust for fresh advice. Can’t argue with that, and I thank her for it.

Returning to the theme of this post. As I browsed from hundreds of quality singles for my first date with Great Expectations, I acknowledged something real. For the longest time, I hadn’t entertained any figurative great expectations for dating and myself in the serendipitous winding course of being human. Last Monday, something astounding happened on little old Hayling Island. an 8 m long Northern Bottlenose whale beached on a mudflat just north of Hayling in Langstone Harbour, Hampshire.

Upsettingly, the Northern Bottlenose had suffered from severe dehydration, which resulted in it suffering from renal failure, when it became entangled on Saturday night.

There was a huge rescue system, where individuals attempted tirelessly to save the Northern Bottlenose whale’s life. There was a time when the team thought that the kind thing to do would be to put the stupefying animal to sleep with a lethal injection. But, the whale then drifted out to sea for one last time. Unluckily, it came back towards the harbour again and was beached for a second and last time.

The special vets decided that the only caring thing to do would be to supply the lethal injection, which they did on Friday morning. They used Immobilon, which was a very quick acting and fatal strength of anaesthetic.

If the mammal wasn’t put to sleep, the experts believe that it would have taken about 2 further days for the whale to die, during which it would have been sick and distressed.

It seemed bizarre that the six tonne mammalian, which is normally found about 3000 miles away, finished up here on Hayling Island, but it is another wonderful story that Hampshire’s Hayling Island brings to its history.

There were around a dozen firefighters, police, coastguard personnel as well as members of the Hayling Island harvour lifeboat staff involved in the attempt.

Although almost 2 million families homeschool their children, there continues to be many misconceptions about the entire process. As always, it’s best to help illuminate the facts instead of feeding the misunderstandings, and so here are the answers to the most common misconceptions about homeschooling.

1. A homeschool education simply cannot compare to a more traditional one.

Actually, test scores seem to indicate that homeschooled children in general test well above average across the country regardless of income, race or the level of education of the parent.

2. Homeschooled children will not be able to get into college.

This is also a misconception as more and more colleges and universities are admitting homeschoolers into their program including such well recognized institutions as Harvard and Yale. In order to qualify for these schools, homeschooled children will most likely have to submit samples of their work, along with letters of recommendation, and CLEP and SAT test results in order to verify the quality of their education.

3. Homeschooled children are not able to develop social skills.

Many people seem to feel that if a child does not attend a public or private school, they will not be able to develop the social skills needed to function well in the adult world. However, the negative behavior problems associated with many children in the school system has been well documented in recent years, and there is no firm evidence that simply attending school helps children develop social skills that will be valuable later on in life.

Most homeschooling parents realize the need for their children to interact with others of their own age as well as adults too, and so they often arrange for well supervised activities where their children can socialize with others of many different age levels. Quite often, there are even homeschool support groups in various areas that help supply social experiences for the families that take part in their group.

4. Homeschooling is only for the wealthy as it is very expensive.

The truth is that homeschooling can be as expensive as you wish to make it. There are expensive homeschooling materials and curriculums that are available complete with video instruction. However there is no evidence that such educational materials are any more effective overall than more simple and inexpensive ones. Many families who homeschool can find excellent used books and materials online, or even make use of those that are found at the local library. At any rate, the evidence seems to suggest that homeschooled children even from the poorest families often seem to be getting a quality education and scoring well on their test scores.

5. Homeschooling is not legal.

Actually, homeschooling is legal in every state in the United States, although there are different governing requirements set out by the individual states. Some states seem to be more homeschool friendly than others, but there are successful homeschoolers in every state in the country.

Obviously, nobody asked the marketing guys before coming up with this one. Who in the world thought up the name “non-qualified deferred compensation?” Oh, it’s descriptive alright. But who wants anything “non-qualified?” Do you want a “non-qualified” doctor, lawyer, or accountant? What’s worse is deferring compensation. How many people want to work today and get paid in five years? The problem is, non-qualified deferred compensation is a great idea; it just has a lousy name.

Non-qualified deferred compensation (NQDC) is a powerful retirement planning tool, particularly for owners of closely held corporations (for purposes of this article, I’m only going to deal with “C” corporations). NQDC plans are not qualified for two things; some of the income tax benefits afforded qualified retirement plans and the employee protection provisions of the Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA). What NQDC plans do offer is flexibility. Great gobs of flexibility. Flexibility is something qualified plans, after decades of Congressional tinkering, lack. The loss of some tax benefits and ERISA provisions may seem a very small price to pay when you consider the many benefits of NQDC plans.

A NQDC plan is a written contract between the corporate employer and the employee. The contract covers employment and compensation that will be provided in the future. The NQDC agreement gives to the employee the employer’s unsecured promise to pay some future benefit in exchange for services today. The promised future benefit may be in one of three general forms. Some NQDC plans resemble defined benefit plans in that they promise to pay the employee a fixed dollar amount or fixed percentage of salary for a period of time after retirement. Another type of NQDC resembles a defined contribution plan. A fixed amount goes into the employee’s “account” each year, sometimes through voluntary salary deferrals, and the employee is entitled to the balance of the account at retirement. The final type of NQDC plan provides a death benefit to the employee’s designated beneficiary.

The key benefit with NQDC is flexibility. With NQDC plans, the employer can discriminate freely. The employer can pick and choose from among employees, including him/herself, and benefit only a select few. The employer can treat those chosen differently. The benefit promised need not follow any of the rules associated with qualified plans (e.g. the $44,000 for 2006) annual limit on contributions to defined contribution plans). The vesting schedule can be whatever the employer would like it to be. By using life insurance products, the tax deferral feature of qualified plans can be simulated. Properly drafted, NQDC plans do not result in taxable income to the employee until payments are made.

To obtain this flexibility both the employer and employee must give something up. The employer loses the up-front tax deduction for the contribution to the plan. However, the employer will get a deduction when benefits are paid. The employee loses the security provided under ERISA. However, frequently the employee involved is the business owner which mitigates this concern. Also there are techniques available to provide the non-owner employee with a measure of security. By the way, the marketing guys have gotten hold of NQDC plans, so you’ll see them called Supplemental Executive Retirement Plans or Excess Benefit Plans among other names.

The Hero’s Journey is the template upon which the vast majority of successful stories and Hollywood blockbusters are based upon – understanding this template is a priority for story or screenwriters.

The Hero’s Journey:

Attempts to tap into unconscious expectations the audience has regarding what a story is and how it should be told.

Gives the writer more structural elements than simply three or four acts, plot points, mid point and so on.

Interpreted metaphorically, laterally and symbolically, allows an infinite number of varied stories to be created.

One critical element of the hero’s journey is Refusal.

If the hero is willing, then refusal often comes in the form of an interdiction and / or warning. If the hero is naturally unwilling, then an unbearable antagonism often pushes the hero into the adventure.

Both of the above are seen in Star Wars (1977). Luke is willing but uncle Owen acts as the Interdictor, forbidding him to embark under threat of some punishment. After meeting Ben Kenobi, Luke decides that he cannot follow Ben to Alderran until he discovers his uncle and aunt have been murdered by Imperial Troops.

The above pattern can be seen in most of the successful stories and screenplays.
