You’re writing your own wedding vows! What seemed like a romantic idea a couple of months ago now has you second-guessing your every word. If this is the only thing you have doubts about, congratulations! As a bride, you’ve planned a wedding so think about writing your wedding vows as another thing that will take a bit of preparation. Here are some tips that can help you put words to paper:
Writing Your Own Vows – Dos & Don’ts:
- Do – Originality Trumps Shakespeare: Although reading a couple of lines from a poem or a quotation is ok, your vows should mostly include your very own words. Share a personal anecdote (i.e. first time you met, knew you were in love, marriage proposal, etc.)
- Don’t – Avoid that Academy Awards Moment: Try not to read entirely from an index card/piece of paper (except if it is a poem or quotation). It’s not a good look that you cannot express your love without using a cheat sheet.
- Do – Practice Makes Perfect: After you’ve finished writing, practice reading aloud. If you stumble over certain words or phrases, then that is a good indication that you might need to change things a bit. Once you are confident, practice saying to someone else.
- Don’t – Let the Cat Out of the Bag: Yes, you will want to coordinate with your fiancée about timing, tone, style, etc., but keep your vows to yourself before the wedding. Plus, you do not want to appear like a Sonny & Cher comedy skit.
- Do – Make them Laugh: Include a funny anecdote about your fiancé or your relationship. This could be a nice way to begin and calm the nerves.
- Don’t – Comedy Roast: Do not include any embarrassing or sad anecdotes about your fiancé or your relationship. Or include any less-than-flattering tidbits about past relationships or about members of your family (remember, some of them are sitting right there!).
- Do – The Shorter, the Better: Before you start writing, decide with your fiancé how long both your vows will be. Make sure your vows will be around the same time. Keep in mind the short attention span of any audience. Aim for 2-3 minutes tops!
