BoTox is rapidly becoming established in Sydney society in fact it is fast becoming an integral part of grooming for many individuals in the city.
Nevertheless I never fail to be amazed by the various myths which surround the procedure.
Here I have included a selection of the more myths frequently encountered at Star Cosmetic Medicine in Pyrmont, Sydney.
Mistake Number 1: I will lose the ability to express emotion!
The human face has 60 or so muscles. Their excessive use over time can result in fine line formation. Too many doses of BoTox have the effect of the musculature of the face appearing somewhat less expressive. The amount used by most doctors result in you looking ‘refreshed’, yet you will keep your facial expression.

By employing a carefully measured quantity of the toxin in exactly the right muscles facial expression is preserved whilst any fine lines and wrinkles undergo a softening effect.
Mistake Number 2: Botulinum is a poisonous substance!
Actually there is a grain of truth in this. Its pharmaceutical name is Botulinum Toxin Type A. Too large a quantity can loosen muscles that you do not want relaxed or may make you extremely ill.
However to put matters into perspective: a famous chemist’s saying is that ‘everything is poisonous – it all depends on the dose’. Any medicine might make you really unwell in large amounts. If you drink too much water you will die.
Mistake Number 3: BoTox injections will be painful!
The needles we use at Star Cosmetic Medicine have a diameter smaller than a human hair. Several people liken the treatments to a mosquito bite. It certainly is less painful than something like a vaccination.
Mistake Number 4: BoTox will numb my face!
False. BoTox targets the neuromuscular junction, and not on the nerves of sensation. Just the ability to relax muscles is impacted by BoTox injections.
Mistake Number 5. You must keep getting BoTox or the lines become even worse!
This is also untrue.
One set of injections is effective for about three months. Consequent injections do last longer. The lines will slowly re-emerge as the muscle recovers its strength. But they will definitely not be any more noticeable than before.
Even if you never had BoTox ever again – those lines will in all probability be a little better than if you hadn’t undergone the procedure. This, of course is chiefly the case because your facial muscles and skin have had a ‘wrinkle holiday’ during the therapy.
