There are many new careers and occupations available today that hadn’t even been thought of as recently as twenty five years ago. Most new careers have come as a result of the growth in digital media and the Internet.
Through widespread use of computers and the World Wide Web we have become data hungry. Most people nowadays have lots of information stored digitally, documents, photographs, music and films are now backed up onto hardware as it is usually such a simple process to carry out.
The ever-growing amount of data that is stored on computers and peripheral devices does carry risks. Thieves are just as likely to steal electronic data as any other item, and through the internet there are opportunities to acquire and share data that isn’t theirs.
Computer forensics is a part of forensic science that is used to find legal evidence found in computers, computer networks and other digital storage devices. It is used in many different types of cases ranging from large scale corporate fraud, IP theft or the taking of intellectual property.
Data can be forensically uncovered from more device than just computers, PDA’s, computer games consoles and MP3 players can all be examined and searched. Data that has thought to have been deleted can often be recovered by a computer forensics expert, as they use advanced techniques to search through hidden files and folder that an average user wouldn’t even know existed.
This growing area of forensic science is a dynamic and ever-changing. As technology continues to change and evolve so do the techniques needed to catch the criminals and stay ahead of the game.
