Interior sliding glass doors are becoming all the rage these days, in commercial building as well as single family homes. In both types of construction glass doors come in a large variety of shapes, sizes, configurations and using many different kinds of materials in their stiles and rails. Frameless glass doors are just that, “custom”; they can be designed with the customers input and with the individual’s tastes and desires in mind. Custom glass doors can be designed with clear glass, tinted glass, glass that has ripples, beveled glass, leaded glass, smoked glass, stained glass, glass that is sculptured, glass that is obscured to make it difficult to see through or frosted which makes seeing through it almost impossible.
The stiles and rails of a custom glass doors can be made out of just about any material one can think of but, they are typically made of either stain grain-grade wood, aluminum or steel, but you will also find custom glass doors with stiles and rails made of medium density fiber board, resin or a combination of all of these. These materials can be altered to fit just about any design motif. There is even a company that uses rare and exotic woods and carves, no, sculpts the wood to fit around the door, add that to the type of enhancement made to the glass, and you have a door that almost a work of art, a custom door in every sense of the word.
The glass doors or even frameless glass doors discussed here thus far are undoubtedly hand crafted and typically these types of glass doors were created for a residential, single family home type application. They were designed and created by artists with many years of training and experience behind them. But all interior sliding glass doors are not works of art. Sometimes glass doors are “custom” simply because they are built to fit a particular opening. Sometimes they are custom because they built in blinds, blinds that are sandwiched in between the two panes of glass in a double panes window.
Custom doors in the commercial world are hardly ever as ornate or as “one of a kind” as the ones designed for home owners. Commercial grade glass doors can be just as unique. Glass doors in the commercial setting can be revolving doors or doors with transoms or side lights. The custom glass doors in a commercial application may have stiles and rails made of forged steel with insets around the glass made of wrought iron. The glass in custom doors used commercially will undoubtedly be made of safety glass designed to shatter into a million pieces if broken, much safer than breaking into several razor sharp shards that can cause a lot of damage to bystanders. The glass used in these applications can be replaced rather easily.
To say the least custom glass doors have developed into a very effective and in some cases very beautiful addition to both the private residence and the business environment.
